WHAT'S UP BLOGGER.
MARVEL, am I right?!
What was the last Marvel movie you saw? If you said Guardians of the Galaxy, you are in the majority. Now, if I asked you if you had ever heard of Guardians of the Galaxy before, most of us would say no. But we saw it. Why? The power of Marvel.
What if I asked you what was the FIRST Marvel movie you saw? Did you see Iron Man? Well, that was the first movie from the "Phase One: Avengers Assembled" films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But if you said Blade, I'd say, yes, that would HAVE to be the first, since it was indeed, the FIRST live action film Marvel produced under "Marvel Studios", released in 1996.
From Blade, Marvel Studios went on to produce X-Men, which went on to gross over $296M at the box office. Yeah. Let's think about that first X-Men. It came out in 2000(yes, Hugh Jackman has been RIPPED as Wolverine for 14 YEARS!!!). Superhero movies were not necessary the most popular genre. Blade had been produced, but was more anti-hero. And, oh boy! Who could forget Batman & Robin, the abysmal Joel Schumaker-directed 1997 sequel of the popular DC comic? Of course, there were the popular Superman films from the 1970s and '80s; and the first few Batman and Batman sequels from the '90s, but it wasn't a regular occurrence like today. Hugh Jackman was virtually unknown.
It was a massive success and spawned 6 wildly successful sequels(some would argue that X-Men Origins:Wolverine was not great, but it was DEFINITELY a successful film) and earned over $3B with 7 films.
Sounds genius to me.
And then there is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Aw yeah.
***SEMI BORING FACT ALERT***
Just FYI, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is legally different from the rest of the Marvel movies(i.e. why X-Men is NOT apart of the MCU). Marvel Studios CO-PRODUCED the films(and its sequels) before Iron Man with a variety of studios, including New Line Cinema, 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Columbia Pictures, and Universal. Most movies after Iron Man(with the except of sequels to the films pre Iron Man) are MCU and produced by Paramount and Disney. Confusing? Read it yourself. It's too confusing to type.
From just the 10 films this studio has produced, it has grossed about $7B in just the box office. That doesn't count Blu-ray, VOD, PPV, or rental sales. Robert Downey Jr never has to work again.
I personally LOVE MCU movies(don't get me started on Loki!). I am the person that will hear about the new Marvel movie and immediately look up info about that comic. Guardians of the Galaxy was the only one I didn't want to see(based on the trailer) but once I gave it a chance, it became one of my favorites.
Now, to answer the question: why is Marvel a genius?
On Oct 28th 2014, Marvel Studios announced Phase Three of their MCU franchise. It includes 5 sequels to Thor, GotG, Captain America and the Avengers(in 2 parts), and 4 new films; Captain Marvel, Inhumans, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange. So what does this mean? The same thing that has been happening for the last 6 years: we're gonna spend our monies! I know I will. It releases endorphins, which make people happy and, boy do we need some happiness! Who doesn't want to go and see an amazing film instead of being depressed by the news?...If you say you do, you're a weirdo.
Here's another reason they are geniuses: Remember the movie Hulk from 2003, with Eric Bana? It made $245M at the box office. Now...do you remember The Incredible Hulk from 2008, with Edward Norton. IT made $263M at the box office. STAN LEE MADE US WATCH IT TWICE! And we did!! The one with Eric Bana was panned by critics(though it was a financial success). But we still saw it. Why? We have X-Men to thank for that.
My (figurative) hat is off to you, Marvel. You made me spend hours watching your films, and simoleons buying your films. And I shall continue that tradition until I am living in a box.
Peace.
